The GAA Museum launches iconic Photographic Exhibition
The GAA Museum continues its 125 celebrations with the launch of a photographic exhibition featuring historic events, great teams and unrivalled individuals. The exhibition features 50 photographs including several enhanced archival images which have never before been on public display.
The earliest photograph on display features the Trinity College Hurling team of 1879, pictured outside the Trinity College Exam Hall three years before the GAA was founded. Other notable images include a magnificent one of Michael Collins, Harry Boland and GAA Secretary Luke O’Toole before a hurling game in Croke Park in 1921.
A number of significant events held in Croke Park over the last century are featured, including the 1924 Rodeo, the 1928 Tailteann Games, Muhammed Ali’s famous fight against Al Blue Lewis and the more recent Special Olympics Opening Ceremony in 2003 and also the U2 concert in 2005.
Great teams of the past and present are included; to the forefront is a team photograph of the Irish Invasions team which represented the GAA during a trip to the United States in 1888, also featured are action shots of Dublin and Armagh players during the fantastic 1977 football final. Present day teams are also featured; Portumna’s Damien Hayes is captured celebrating a goal in the 2009 All Ireland Club Championship Final and Tyrone’s Sean Cavanagh is also pictures in action earlier this year.
All aspects of the organisation are featured including, football, hurling, ladies football and camogie. The Mullaghbhan Ceili group playing at half time during the 2009 club final and action shots of the All Ireland Handball Doubles Finals of 2008 are key aspects of the Exhibition.
A unique feature of the Exhibition is the opportunity for visitors to buy a piece of GAA History as certain images are on sale. The Exhibition is currently open to members of the public.
