Hurling -The Fastest Field Game in the World

Hurling is known as the fastest field sport in the world with hurling ball or sliotar travelling at speeds in excess of 160 kmh

The GAA Museum has recently introduced a speed gun and top speed leader board to its popular games interactive area. The GAA Museum is extending an invitation to all museum visitors to enter our ‘Fastest Hurler’ competition to test their skills of speed by hitting the sliotar/ball against a target. The speed all strikes is recorded in kilometres per hour on the score board above the target.

The fastest speed of the year will win 2 tickets for the 2009 All-Ireland Hurling Final. The top 10 speeds will enter a draw to win a GAA Pack to include a signed county jersey of choice and a framed 1938 picture of Croke Park. Winners will be announced on the 1st September.

If you think you have the speed of Cú Chulainn or what it takes to get to the top of the GAA Museum 'Fastest Hurler' leader board why not pay us a visit!

Terms and conditions

  • The competition will run from Jan 2009 through to August 31st 2009.
  • In order to validate speeds and enter the competition a ‘strike’ at target must be witnessed by a member of the GAA Museum staff, a group leader or a teacher.
  • Each strike must be taken between the 2 white lines in the right hand interactive lane.

New Croke Park Experience Shuttle Bus

ShuttlebusCroke Park Stadium has announced plans for a shuttle bus service from Dublin City Centre to the home of Gaelic games.  The 'Croke Park Experience Shuttle Bus' will take to the streets of Dublin on Tuesday 30th June with the service taking tourists from the centre of Dublin's fair city to its landmark venue. Starting out from Trinity College, the bus will stop at each of the City Sightseeing Bus Stops - Trinity College, St Stephens Green, Suffolk Street, O’Connell Street and Parnell Square - on route to GAA headquarter

Sightseeing Bus Stops - Trinity College, St Stephens Green, Suffolk Street, O’Connell Street and Parnell Square - on route to GAA headquarters.

The introduction of the shuttle service is timely as the GAA continue their 125th anniversary celebrations.  The Croke Park Stadium and GAA Museum tours have become one of the capitals "must see" attractions in recent years and the new shuttle will facilitate greater numbers of visitors in getting to the venue.

"We're delighted that our tours have continued to attract visitors from at home and overseas and we are always looking at new ways to enhance the experience. We understand that it can be difficult and costly for tourists visiting the capital to make their way around all of the attractions so the idea behind the shuttle is to make it more accessible and easier for everyone to enjoy the Croke Park Experience at their leisure.  We also hope that it will encourage Dublin natives to hop on the bus and visit the stadium outside of match days" says Mark Dorman, GAA Museum Director.

The shuttle will run throughout the summer at regular intervals each day.

The GAA Museum launches iconic Photographic Exhibition

The GAA Museum continues its 125 celebrations with the launch of a photographic exhibition featuring historic events, great teams and unrivalled individuals. The exhibition features 50 photographs including several enhanced archival images which have never before been on public display.

The earliest photograph on display features the Trinity College Hurling team of 1879, pictured outside the Trinity College Exam Hall three years before the GAA was founded. Other notable images include a magnificent one of Michael Collins, Harry Boland and GAA Secretary Luke O’Toole before a hurling game in Croke Park in 1921.

A number of significant events held in Croke Park over the last century are featured, including the 1924 Rodeo, the 1928 Tailteann Games, Muhammed Ali’s famous fight against Al Blue Lewis and the more recent Special Olympics Opening Ceremony in 2003 and also the U2 concert in 2005.

Great teams of the past and present are included; to the forefront is a team photograph of the Irish Invasions team which represented the GAA during a trip to the United States in 1888, also featured are action shots of Dublin and Armagh players during the fantastic 1977 football final. Present day teams are also featured; Portumna’s Damien Hayes is captured celebrating a goal in the 2009 All Ireland Club Championship Final and Tyrone’s Sean Cavanagh is also pictures in action earlier this year.

All aspects of the organisation are featured including, football, hurling, ladies football and camogie. The Mullaghbhan Ceili group playing at half time during the 2009 club final and action shots of the All Ireland Handball Doubles Finals of 2008 are key aspects of the Exhibition.

A unique feature of the Exhibition is the opportunity for visitors to buy a piece of GAA History as certain images are on sale. The Exhibition is currently open to members of the public.

GAA PRESS RELEASE

1 December 2008

GAA Season Ticket

The GAA has launched a reduced price Season Ticket for the 2009 season. This is the first of many planned ticketing packages to be introduced over the coming years as part of the Association's continuing development of ticketing operations.

The county and code specific ticket has been designed to meet the unique requirements of the GAA fixtures schedule. The ticket, excellent value at €75 entitles the supporter to entry to all Allianz GAA National League round games and the first round of the GAA Senior championship involving their county in their chosen code and a discounted price for all subsequent games, excluding Provincial and All-Ireland final.

There is an in-built loyalty programme involved in the ticket in that, should the supporter's county in the chosen code, qualify for the All-Ireland final then based on a minimum attendance of 60% the supporter is guaranteed an All-Ireland final ticket.

Speaking at the launch, GAA President Nickey Brennan said: "I am very pleased to launch the GAA Season Ticket for 2009, which has been designed to accommodate our unique fixtures programme. I am particularly delighted that loyal supporters now have the opportunity to guarantee themselves a ticket for the All-Ireland final should their county qualify."
